Research

Working Document (FigJam)

In this research, we seek to reduce uncertainty and find a market fit for the proposed project of a start-up in its initial phase, aiming to create a platform for repurposing and reducing waste. Primarily, but not exclusively, focusing on toys and clothing.

In the first phase of research, in addition to a competitor analysis and related actions (social groups, actions by municipalities, etc.), I would look for solutions in other countries and cultures to address these types of challenges.

OpenIDEO: Plastic Waste Solutions in Circular Design Challenge.

I want to see if any of these approaches can be useful or provide us with a new perspective. I am particularly interested in how the Dabbawalas inspired a food delivery system for workers in Silicon Valley, or what the novel exchange system was like in kiosks in the 60s.

A co-creation process with stakeholders, investors, involved agents, and potential users could be very relevant.

Defined Project Objectives

  • Social impact goods exchange platform

  • Mobile platform (Android and iOS)

  • Agile, secure, and enjoyable process

  • Buy/Sell or donate

Market Analysis

  • Proliferation of rental storage spaces

  • Existing solutions (see Discovery)

  • Market opportunities and gaps

Quantitative Research

  • Scraping second-hand sales platforms (Wallapop, Vinted, Cash Converters, etc.) to categorize and gather statistical data on which products are most present on these platforms.

    • I have a Python specialist who has already done this in a research project on rental price evolution, job offers, etc. Example: Data Mestika.

    • Based on our findings, we can focus on the most promising areas, such as a system for exchanging and selling second-hand toys.

  • Research numerical information related to plastic pollution and discarded clothing.

  • Studies and reports on the circular economy

  • Conversations with experts, such as fashion companies like Inditex, on how they are addressing this issue. I know that not only they but also brands like Patagonia, H&M, and Levi's are working on the circular economy. There may be an opportunity, but at the very least, there will be valuable information that is not readily accessible.

Qualitative Research

  • Talk to parents in playgrounds.

  • Talk to young people interested in fashion. What opportunities can we find regarding platforms like Vinted?

  • Online surveys and social media polls to find opportunities and corner cases (different usage contexts that could be useful).

  • Non-invasive observation in places like clothing recycling containers (Koopera) and clean points (Garbiker).

    • What are the behaviors?

    • There is vandalism, intimidation...

    • Collection system

    • Types of products

Identification of Personas

Who are our users?

  • People who need space

  • Fashion lovers

  • Mothers and fathers with children who have many toys and do not want to throw them away due to environmental consciousness.

  • ...

I would create a User Journey for these types of people to see what their current path is and to take it into account in the design of our application.

Important Considerations:

  • Confidentiality and Ethics: Ensure the privacy and consent of participants. Measures should also be in place to avoid harassment and dangerous situations for participants.

  • Diversity of Users: Include a diverse sample to obtain representative insights.

  • Iteration: Review and adjust hypotheses and prototypes based on research results. We start from the assumption that fashion enthusiasts may be interested in a network to complete their "outfits," acquire new garments, and get rid of those they no longer wear, locally, even trying them on in a safe environment. This hypothesis could be tested with a prototype.

Techniques:

  • In-Depth Interviews: To obtain deep qualitative insights.

  • Online Surveys: For quantitative data and general trends.

  • Competitor Analysis: Benchmarking to identify best practices.

Insights

To narrow down and adjust the scope of this exercise, we will focus on young people who love fashion, have a limited budget, and view trying on and finding their style as part of their life process.
